NYWIC Student Conference Recap 2018
This past November, I had the pleasure of attending the New York Women in Communication Student Conference at New York University.
Each year, the New York Women in Communications hosts a day-long conference, featuring over 30 communications professionals speaking on 10 different topics. Hundreds of students attend to get career tips on various aspects in the communication fields, ranging from entrepreneurship to marketing to scholarships and financial wellness.
What I enjoy most about the conference is that its female organization, female-driven and tailored to help young women starting their career out their best for forward in having a successful start and a blooming career for many years to come.
I was able to acquire an abundance of new skills, as well as improve the ones I entered with such networking and bordering my network, which lead to a speaker invitation by the end of the event for the upcoming Spring semester at New York University Stren Business School.
One the great lessons I learned early on during the day is that the other young women I saw me from various other schools from the metro area, who sat beside me were not my future competitors in the communications field, but rather allies and friends who would be there to encourage me, enable me to form useful relationships in the industry, and ultimately, serve as a support system as I build upon my career in advertising.
My key takeaways from the conference were:
- The importance of being a lifetime learner:
I can truly relate this, as being a full-time student as well as already working as An Art Director at an Advertising agency, there is much value in keeping my knowledge fresh and up to date, there are many times where I have used lessons learned in the classroom the next day in a meeting, never once I have regretted my decision to go back to school and attend BIC.
2. The Importance of staying up to date with Technolgy and what's happening around us.
I find this key point especially important because as a creative you never know what your next brief is going to be, nor the deliverables. And saying up to date with the technology and what is happening around us with help improve ones work and make sure it is relevant in terms of timing a well us relevant to the demographic we are trying to reach, as well as being able to reach out demographic in new innovative ways.
3. The importance of letting data drive your insights and ideas.
To be able to create effective and award-winning work, one must be able to find unique and effective insights, to be able to create strong campaigns with innovating ideas that can maximize the impact of the one's communication objective.
4. Trust your gut and don't settle
Once you are able to unique insights and data points, and you are able to prove it through research, learn how to support your work and be able to defend it, and answer any question key stake people may have in your project.
5. Give your self-time to learn and be comfortable with your work
All these skills we not be gained overnight and failer is part of the process. If you don't get a strong insight the first time, try again as practice makes perfect and we all learn from our failers.
6. Insights are Power articulation of powerful proof.
A good insight is authentic, nonobvious, revealing and tells a human truth almost always.
7. A clear and easy to understand communication plan is important to have.
Because the communication function guides management to create the relationships and reputation they need to succeed as a business.
8. An Idea Vs. a Tactic
There is a big difference between an idea and a tactic. An idea can live on, it could be instead, has an outcome as well as many possible executions. On the other hand, a tragic has a limited lifespan, must be concrete and has an output and is an execution of itself.
One of my Favorite quotes of the day was, that has inspired to put my best foot forward is:
“At the end of the day brand purpose is to find where they fit in the consumer's life and build long term relationships and to make the product or service part of their a lifestyle.”
In conclusion, I would recommend female BIC students to join New York women in communication and become members attend events such as this yearly conference at New York University.
