The first takeaway I took from the conference is the fact that prebunking can assist in dampening the schism that exists within the United States. Prebunking is the act of giving people the ability to identify false information and debunk said information themselves. This takeaway came from the “Smarter Social Storytelling” section. As Social Media runs amuck with unregulated content within communities there is a lot of misinformation and disinformation being spread. A research organization decided to try to combat misinformation through a game that allows the user to be the one that distributes the misinformation. Dan Stiles stated this in his presentation on the matter

“Researchers found that participants were 21% less likely to believe disinformation. They also showed that those who were most likely to believe propaganda at the outset were the people who benefited most from the inoculation.”

Which means that there are methods to battle against the disinformation crisis that plagues society. The issue is that there are not many people who are actively participating in prebunking disinformation. People tend to dismiss information that does not align with their perception of the world so, instead of engaging in disputes, people should engage with prebunking information. If everyone engaged with prebunking then this can help reduce the schism that exists within the United States. Before this segment in the Adobe Max Conference I did not know that prebunking existed for disinformation. In order to assist in the fight against disinformation I encourage you to engage with prebunking on the getbadnews website (https://www.getbadnews.com/#intro) and share it with other individuals.

The second takeaway that I took from the conference is how photography can have a lasting effect on people and society. This takeaway came from the “The Art of Photography: Desktop & Mobile” session. Mark Seliger said,

“Once you figure out what that destination is, once you figure out what that first subject is, then all the possibilities start to come about.”

He follows this up with students attempting to desegregate a movie theater. Buying all the tickets and not attending the movie did not work. When the same students took a photo of white and black students sitting in alternating seats in the movie theater it resulted in the movie theater getting good press and becoming desegregated. This really stood out to me because some people might think some pictures are random or redundant but, the picture is ultimately communicating something. The individual wants to communicate something about themselves or the world around us. Pictures are used as an informational and persuasive device as it invites individuals to become engaged, empathize with the message, and invites further discussion.  With a large enough audience there can be societal change if a majority decide to be a part of the change. If a photograph helped in the fight against segregation, then it can be applied to lesser and major aspects of society.

The final takeaway I have from the Adobe Max conference is the fact that people are habitual, and it is difficult to perform under extraordinary circumstances. This comes from the “Productivity: Automating Your Professional Life” section. The speaker Rajan Gupta said in his presentation “Working from home has morphed into Living at Work”. Before COVID-19 there would be a separation between work and life which some can attribute to visual differences. After COVID-19 the lines have become blurred and a variety of different consequences may have arisen. Homes have become the workplace for many individuals instead of a retreat from said work. This results in people taking minimal breaks and/or becoming stressed as there is no visual difference from home and work now. The speaker mentions that some applications may help regulate a person's life and work balance, but I never thought the two would be blended so much for some individuals. Understanding individuals during these times are crucial since they might be under constant stress. Ask some people how they are doing as it might be the thing that grants them some normalcy within their lives once again.
