New York Women in Communications Mentoring Event

NYWICI mentors and mentees at mentoring event.

As a way to get more involved with New York Women in Communications (NYWICI), I decided to apply
for the New York Women in Communications Mentoring Program. As a mentee, I was paired with my
mentor Melissa, who is a marketing communications manager. She is knowledgeable about all things
related to the communications field, and she was very helpful when it came to resume and cover letter
writing. As my mentor, she would schedule monthly check-in calls, and we even chatted over breakfast.

During the NYWICI Mentoring Event, I got to meet several mentees and mentors, and they shared their
experiences throughout the mentorship. NYWICI’s mentoring chairs Bonnie Blake and Sheryl Victor Levy
as well special guest Opal Vadhan, executive assistant to Secretary Hillary Clinton, were all in attendance.
Vadhan shared her journey to becoming executive assistant to Secretary Clinton.

NYWICI believes that great relationships can empower great careers at all levels. Wherever you are in
your career, mentoring can provide an opportunity to learn and grow, whether you are a mentor or a
mentee. Mentors can guide a mentee one-on-one, or asked to mentor a small group of mentees.
A mentee can ask to work with a mentor one-on-one, which is what I did, or can ask to join a small group
of mentees hosted by a mentor. The mentorship lasts from Fall 2018 to May 31, 2019.
The mentoring program is wonderful, and I feel like I’m able to ask my mentor for advice even after the
mentorship is over. She is a mentor and friend for life. To find out more about joining the mentoring
program, click here. You must be a member of NYWICI before applying.
